During my high school years, Mr. Michael Bracewell was my Head of Year, as well as my
Chemistry teacher. To me, he was not only act as a teacher, but also a guide who was truly
willing to devote his time and patience to his students.
I was originally studying at a domestic public high school, and later transferred to an
international school. When I first encountered Chemistry examinations conducted entirely in
English, my results were not ideal. Faced with completely unfamiliar academic English
expressions and examination formats, I felt extremely frustrated for a period of time. He took
the initiative to contact me and used extra time to go through the exam paper with me question
by question, explaining the key points and telling me how to understand the logic behind the
English questions. Before I had mastered the subject-specific vocabulary that other students
were already familiar with, he specifically guided me to study these technical terms and
expressions in advance, enabling me to truly understand the lessons and keep up with the
learning progress. He cared not only about my grades, but also about whether I had built up my
confidence
As a Head of Year, he also cared deeply about every student. He made the effort to get to know
every student in the year group and sent emails with personalized birthday wishes to each of
them. These seemingly small gestures made the students feel very reassured. Because you knew
that there was a teacher who was genuinely paying attention to you.
When I first arrived in the UK, I felt very fortunate to see him again during the first week. He
helped me become familiar with the city, told me about things to pay attention to in daily life,
and shared many suggestions about local culture and learning methods. That meeting allowed
me to quickly find direction amid the initial unfamiliarity and anxiety.
After that, we continued to keep in touch. Because of his encouragement, I was not hesitant to
communicate with local students. I did not miss the crucial first two weeks of term to make
friends, and I was able to integrate into the new learning environment more quickly. After my
parents noticed that I was able to stay in contact with him in the UK, they also felt more at ease
about my life here. For them, I can received this kind of support from a teacher we both known
well is quite a lucky thing for my whole family.
From my own experience, if a student, first arriving in the UK, can have someone like him:
understands the background of Chinese students, familiar with life in the UK, and genuinely cares
about students’ development to offer support. I believe that both the anxiety that comes with
arriving in a new country and the worries of parents whose child is far away in a foreign land can
be greatly reduced.
